Holding onto an
ancient craft, Shoe School,
preserves the art of shoe making, which has been all but lost in
America.
"My family
members were shoe makers, ," says Zerobnick, '" who started shoe making
at 15. "I started working with a
friend who made sandals and after sandals and then I learned how to make lasted footwear.
Zerobnick says he had a lot of on-the-job training but there were no
other places to learn. So he started the Shoe School. In the early
days, the Shoe School began with informal private lessons, which
evolved into 30-day workshops.
Today they have several programs. The five-day Introduction to Shoemaking
allows students to walk away in a pair of shoes they've made with
their own hands and the three- day Introduction to the Business of
Shoemaking is geared toward industry insiders who want to see the
entire shoe-making process and learn how to apply the knowledge to
their businesses.
